Ghost.org
An incredibly valid, Open Source alternative to Wordpress.
What I like about it
I’ve had my eye on Ghost for quite some time, having first tried one of its early versions over ten years ago (though I can’t recall exactly which one). Unlike WordPress, Ghost has followed a completely different path, staying true to its original purpose: writing. Of course, it also offers themes, integrations, and more, but what truly sets it apart is its focus on providing exactly what writers need: a clean, lightweight experience without unnecessary frills.
What I don't like about it
The last time I used Ghost was in its cloud version in August 2024, right before I decided to move my blog to this website, powered by my own native solution. I found Ghost to be absolutely brilliant and easy to use, with one notable drawback: the official themes available under the $9/month plan come with limited customisation options. I learned this the hard way when I realised I couldn’t remove certain elements from my theme, even though I had chosen the most stripped-down version available. Essentially, I was aiming for a fully minimal blog, but I wasn’t able to achieve it. Upgrading to the next tier would have cost $25/month — a steep increase. I believe the pricing plans could benefit from some optimisation.
